Documentary has a rich and fascinating history, from the first films of the Lumière Brothers to the modern, sometimes controversial, renaissance on Netflix and other streaming platforms. But “subject” in documentary carries more than historical weight. It also refers to the people and stories captured on screen and the complex, often delicate relationship between filmmaker and participant.
In this masterclass, Annie Goldson explores both meanings of “subject”: the documentary as a cinematic form and the human subjects within it. She will examine how these relationships can involve intricate power dynamics, ethical considerations, and creative negotiation. Participants are encouraged to bring questions and curiosities, making this a highly interactive and thought-provoking session.
